In the majority of New Zealand ports, there is limited amount of suitable crew hotel inventory. Hotels are either electing to temporarily close or remain open on skeleton staff, and it is a difficult market to house crew members and achieve savings while doing so.

In order to meet this head-on, API has led market assessments and built negotiation strategies specifically designed for the entire regional network. Our objective is to secure savings as a result of the drastically different market conditions brought on by COVID-19.

Having long-standing and established relationships with our hotel partners was critical to enabling us to negotiate rate reductions, more favorable contract terms, and additional value adds within a short timeline. Due to our history working together, our New Zealand hotel partners were keen on maintaining their valued partnership with the airline and API. These negotiations also allowed them to lock in longer term contracts, which will equally support the return of their business over the coming years as the entire travel industry looks towards recovery.

It has become clear that the swift action, targeted negotiations, and strong partnerships are critical to API’s approach in supporting our airline partners during these changing market conditions.
